DirectX 9 is a collection for APIs to support game rendering and multimedia handling in the Windows environment. It includes many libraries and software to support high-quality 2D & 3D graphics.
- Windows 8 and 10 come with DirectX 11 and 12 by default which do not include DirectX 9 and previous versions. This is why you might need to install DirectX 9 manually if you want to play some games on pc using these operating systems.
- You actually cannot install DirectX 9 for Windows 10 as Windows 10 comes with DirectX11 / 12 modules. There is a way to manually acquire and install the individual.
- This is related to this question DirectX 11 is installed but programs say DirectX 9.0c is needed. But more so that I don't get 'errors' saying I don't have DirectX 9.0c installed, but I can't launch Retroarch and I'm thinking it's related to DirectX 9.0c not being installed.

Windows 10 is pre-installed and the games are discs such as The Sims 2 etc which all run on Windows XP. I have tried to install DirectX 9.0c but the laptop won't allow it due to the Windows 10 os so I'm not sure what else I can do.
